University of York Chinese Gala – Genting Hays on Event
Every successful event is built on what the audience can see, hear and feel. For the University of York Chinese Gala, sound was one of the key elements that brought the performance to life — and Genting Hays was proud to be responsible for the event sound design and live audio direction in both 2025 and 2026.
Across two years of collaboration, our team supported the Gala with a complete live sound workflow, including microphone planning, input management, stage audio coordination, live mixing support and technical scheduling. From music performances and spoken segments to group acts and stage transitions, every part of the event required careful preparation to ensure the audience could experience a clear, balanced and professionally controlled live sound.
Designing Sound for a Complex Live Event
The University of York Chinese Gala was not a simple one-microphone event. It involved multiple performers, different performance formats, stage changes, music playback, live vocals and speech sections. Each part required its own audio solution.
One of the biggest challenges was the microphone design. Across the event, the team had to plan and manage around 20 microphones, each serving a different purpose on stage. Vocal microphones, host microphones, performance microphones and backup options all needed to be arranged clearly, labelled correctly and coordinated with the event running order.
In live event sound, microphone planning is not just about quantity. It is about timing, movement, performer position, stage layout, gain control, feedback prevention and making sure every microphone is ready at the exact moment it is needed. A small mistake in the input list or changeover timing can affect the whole performance flow.
Working Under Time Pressure
Another major challenge was the event schedule. Large student-led galas often involve many departments working at the same time: performers, directors, stage managers, lighting teams, video teams, volunteers and technical staff. This means the audio team must work with limited rehearsal time, quick stage changes and constant updates.
For Genting Hays, the goal was to keep the sound workflow organised and reliable. We prepared technical plans, followed the event timetable, adjusted microphone assignments according to performance needs and communicated closely with the wider production team.
Even when the schedule became tight, the team remained focused on three priorities:
- keeping every microphone and input clearly organised
- ensuring smooth transitions between performances
- maintaining stable and clear sound throughout the event
From Planning to Final Performance
A successful live event does not happen only on the day. It begins with preparation.
Before the Gala, Genting Hays worked through the event structure, performance requirements, microphone list and technical timing. During setup and rehearsal, we refined the audio workflow, checked microphone placement, balanced levels and prepared for possible changes.
On the event day, our team supported the live sound operation from start to finish, helping ensure that each performance could be heard clearly and that the event atmosphere remained polished and professional.
The result was a smooth and successful live sound experience for both the 2025 and 2026 University of York Chinese Gala. Despite the technical challenges of microphone planning, multiple stage requirements and tight scheduling, the event was completed successfully and received positive feedback from the team and audience.
Genting Hays on Event
For Genting Hays, live event sound is more than technical support. It is about understanding the rhythm of a performance, the needs of the performers and the experience of the audience.
Our work at the University of York Chinese Gala reflects the kind of event audio service we aim to provide: organised, responsive, creative and reliable. Whether it is a cultural gala, concert, showcase, corporate event or creative performance, we believe sound should support the whole event — not simply be added at the end.
From microphone design and live mixing to technical coordination and on-site sound direction, Genting Hays helps events sound clear, confident and professionally delivered.
Looking Forward
We are proud to have contributed to the success of the University of York Chinese Gala in both 2025 and 2026. These projects gave us the opportunity to work in a fast-moving live environment, solve real technical challenges and support a meaningful cultural event within the university community.
Genting Hays will continue to provide professional live event sound production for artists, organisers, student societies, brands and creative teams who want their events to sound as polished as they look.
